The Revolution Comes to Charleston

Soldiers raising a crescent moon and star flag during a historic battle.

Don’t you know? We’re Talking About a Revolution.

What's This Tour About?

Charleston’s role in the American Revolution began long before 1776, placing the city at the very heart of revolutionary ideals and determined patriot resistance. On this immersive walking tour, you’ll stroll the historic streets of Charleston and step back into the conflict that secured America’s independence.

Along the way, you’ll encounter the homes and final resting places of Founding Fathers, hear the stories of bold Patriots and powerful Loyalists, and explore how Charleston became a strategic prize for both sides. Learn about the failed British assault that delivered one of the colonies’ earliest victories, the relentless return of British forces, and the eventual fall of Charleston in one of the most devastating defeats of the war—along with everything in between.

We start at the marker for Shepheards Tavern, located at 46 Broad Street, and walk through portions of the Old and Historic District for about 90 minutes, ending on East Bay Street. By the end of this tour, you’ll leave with a deeper, more surprising appreciation for Charleston’s pivotal role in the American Revolution—when the Revolution came to Charleston.

Why is this tour so great?

What makes this tour special is that it tells the story of Charleston’s Revolution as something that was centuries in the making. Long before shots were fired in Massachusetts, this city was shaped by rivalries between England, Spain, and France, by Native alliances and wars, and by the constant tension of living on a contested frontier. You don’t just hear about independence — you see how survival, trade, warfare, and wealth slowly pushed Charleston toward it.

This experience also highlights how close the colony came to collapse. The devastating Yamasee War that put Charleston on a path to being part of a royal colony, and later the British siege of 1780 became one of the worst American defeats of the entire war. Rather than focusing only on victories, the tour explores moments of uncertainty, fear, and resilience — times when Charleston’s future truly hung in the balance.

You’ll also gain insight into the powerful personalities who shaped events here — from outspoken members of British Parliament who defended colonial rights, to royal governors who fled the city, to local leaders who risked everything for independence. Their debates over taxation, loyalty, liberty, and power unfolded in taverns, homes, and public squares that still stand today.

Finally, what makes this walk unforgettable is the setting itself. Charleston isn’t a city that rebuilt from scratch — it’s layered. Fortifications lie buried beneath the streets, symbols of protest still fly from historic homes, and waterfront views once filled with warships now hold quiet harbor breezes. The past isn’t abstract here. It surrounds you.

The Ghosts With the Most: A Haunted History Tour

Eerie nighttime scene promoting a Charleston ghost walking tour.

Meet Charleston’s most notorious spirits face-to-face on The Ghosts with the Most walking tour.

What's This Tour About?

Step into the shadows of the Holy City on “The Ghosts with the Most” — a spine-tingling 90-minute walking ghost tour through the haunted streets of historic Charleston. As twilight settles over centuries-old cobblestones, you’ll uncover chilling true tales of restless spirits, tragic duels, lingering echoes of wars, and the whispers that still drift from grand mansions and hidden alleyways. Led by an expert local guide, this immersive tour blends rich history with eerie storytelling, bringing Charleston’s most legendary hauntings to life right where they happened. Whether you’re a skeptic or a believer, prepare for goosebumps, unforgettable stories, and a hauntingly good time you won’t soon forget.

Why is this tour so great?

What makes **The Ghosts with the Most** special is its focus on the layered, lingering past of Charleston — a city that didn’t just witness history, but absorbed it. From unmarked graves hidden beneath modern pavement to waterfront streets that once held gallows, docks, and dueling grounds, this tour explores how centuries of triumph, tragedy, fire, war, and heartbreak may have left something behind.

Rather than relying on jump scares or theatrics, this experience blends deeply researched history with chilling firsthand accounts. You’ll hear of unexplained photographs, mysterious cold spots, phantom sounds, and encounters reported by locals, staff, and visitors alike — stories that span from the Revolutionary era to World War II and beyond.

The tour also offers rare visual connections between past and present, including views of the towering Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge and the legendary USS Yorktown — places where modern engineering and preserved military history intersect with lingering local legend. Not every spirit here is said to be angry; some are believed to still be on duty.

Finally, the evening closes near the historic Old Exchange Building and Provost Dungeon, where the contrast between celebration and confinement has unsettled visitors for generations. It’s a powerful reminder that in Charleston, the line between past and present can feel remarkably thin — and sometimes, as guests discover, history doesn’t always stay buried.
